The Urology Unit was accredited as a separate unit in the Department of Surgery in 1981 and it was elevated to an independent department in 1998 with Prof KM Singh as its first Head of Department. Prof D. Dalela became Head in July 2003 and relinquished his charge in Sept. 2008 as he opted for contractual appointment as Professor and Prof. S.N. Sankhwar took over as Head after that.
Presently a team of 6 faculty members, one supporting consultant, eighteen residents, one research officer and nearly 120 paramedical and ministerial staff personals are managing day to day affairs of the department.
Activities
1.
The department provides 'state of the art' diagnostic and therapeutic modalities in urology.
2.
The department has started M. Ch. in Urology after getting recognition from MCI in year 2005 and now admits 6 students for every year.
3.
The Government of India recognizes the department as a 'Center of Excellence' for work on male contraception. It is also recognized as a training centre for "No-Scalpel Vasectomy".
4.
The department is active in organizing conferences. One Hundred Two (102) Scientific Meetings have been organized in the last 19 years (From 2004 to October 2022).

The department is very actively pursuing research in areas of prostatic disease, reconstructive urology, stone disease etc. and many clinical projects are underway.
Thrust areas for the future include laparoscopic urology, neurovesical dysfunction management, female urology, prostatic diseases, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy and robotic surgery.
Previous Head of Department:
Prof. K. M. Singh (1998-2003) was instrumental in carving the department out of general surgery and toiled hard to establish the lower tract endourology.
Prof. D. Dalela (2003 - 2008) was instrumental in building the department and getting the M.Ch. recognized by the Medical Council of India. The credit of starting various services like lithotripsy, urodynamics etc goes to him. The department expanded many-fold during his tenure and took its present shape.
