In 1979 near about 20 research projects funded by various funding agencies were running in the different departments of this institution. Back then the grants were received either by the department itself or in the name of Principal K.G.M.C. The accounts were maintained at the departmental level. To increase efficiency it was decided that all the grants should be received in the name of Principal, King George's Medical College and should be kept in the Principal's Office, so that the proper records of accounts as well as staff engaged in the project could be maintained in the office of Principal, Prof. K. P. Bhargava then Principal, King George's Medical College decided to create a Research Cell in the College. Thus in October 1979 Research Cell was formed.
The King George's Medical College was upgraded to the Medical University by the Govt. of U.P. on 16th September 2002 and Research Cell was reorganized and revamped.
Dr. Shally Awasthi, Professor in Pediatrics was appointed as the first Faculty In-charge of Research Cell in September 2003. On 12thJune 2014 Dr. Ravindra Kumar Garg, Professor & Head, Department of Neurology has been appointed as the Faculty In-charge of Research Cell.
Research Cell Activities
There is a vibrant research environment in the University. The University has ICMR and GCP Standard compliant Institutional Ethics Committee with competent internal and renowned external members, the Institutional Ethics Committee has been registered with DCGI vide registration No. ECR/262/Inst/UP/2013 dated 05.06.2013 and have been re-registered vide registration No. ECR/262/Inst/UP/2013/RR-16 from 5th June 2016 for three years.
There are currently more than 200 ongoing extramurally funded research projects awarded to faculty of 32 departments by national funding agencies like Department of Health research (DHR); Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Department Biotechnology (DBT); Department of Science & Technology (DST); UP Council of Science & Technology (UPCST) and international funding agencies like World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, Bill & Melinda Gates foundation etc. and private pharmaceutical and Clinical Research Organizations. All extramurally funded projects are managed through the Research Cell.
Intramural grants for junior faculty, postgraduates and undergraduates are given every year with the aim to promote and support high quality research work culture and to place them at a position of advantage. Research Cell also started PhD courses in year 2004. Teaching and training courses/workshops/seminars are organized by Research Cell from time to time for faculty and students of the University.

In year 2004 Ph.D. programme was initiated at King George’s Medical University, U.P. (KGMU) in bio-medical sciences to promote state-of-art research and to mentor scholars in their area of specialization. In addition, these candidates are trained in areas like research methodology, bio-statistics, computer use, etc. This ensures general proficiency as researcher in biomedical sciences and increases the likelihood of their pursuing a successful career in research. Successful candidates are awarded “Doctor of Philosophy” from King George’s Medical University, UP. While this degree is not being awarded in any specific subject, the award certificate mentions the title of the thesis along with the month and year of the award of degree. The university ensures that outputs of Ph.D. programme are original works of excellence leading to discovery of new facts in science or evolution of fresh approach towards interpretation of existing facts. This document lists the rules and regulations for the Ph.D. programme at the university. These can be reviewed and modified from time to time in the interest of the programme.
Every year the Research Cell organizes 'Research Showcase'. In this event, plenary lectures delivered by distinguished scientists are held. Faculty in Charge sums up the achievements of the previous year and teachers put up posters of papers published in the preceding year. Intramural Research Grants
KGMU always makes effort to inculcate habit of research among young faculty and medical students. With the aim to promote and support high quality research work culture and to place young faculty, postgraduate and undergraduate students at a position of advantage, intra-mural seed grant program was started in the University since year 2003. Under this scheme University provides funds to young faculty, postgraduate and undergraduate students on competitive basis. University also encourages them to publish their research findings in reputed medical journals.
Eligible to apply for Intramural Research Grants are:
Young faculty members (Lecturers and Asstt. Professors)
Any registered first year postgraduate (MD/MS/MDS) students (JR-1) and first year superspecialty (DM/MCh) students (SR-1)
Any registered undergraduate (MBBS/BDS) student of the medical university whose term is valid for at least 6 months. Under this scheme students have to work on a research project under a mentor (ordinarily a senior faculty member of the University).
