About Department
The department of Pulmonary Medicine provides teaching, training and research facilities to MBBS, MD, DTCD and PhD, M.phil. One of the premier and oldest centre of excellent for training & research in the field of Pulmonary Medicine. The department of tuberculosis & Chest Diseases was established in 1946 under the leadership of Dr. R.N.Tandon. The department started as a tuberculosis clinic with "Kasturba TB Hospital" a 40 beded hospital attached to it. The MD degree course in tuberculosis was started in 1951 and the diploma in tuberculosis & chest diseases was started in 1954. A seprate OPD wing was added to the Kasturba TB Hospital in 1956 which was inaugurated by the them Minister of Health Late Sri CB Gupta. Since then the department has come a lonf way and is gradually expanding its arms in the field of Pulmonary Medicine and is now a 140 beded hospital catering to the needs of respiratory diseases patients. At present the department has a functioning allergy clinic, pulmonary function test and bronchoscopy laboratory, Thorachoscopy lab, Sleep lab and is a renowned centre for the management of tuberculosis, asthma, lung cancer, and other allied chest diseases. We promise better advancements and developments in the near future with state of the facilities for patients of respiratory diseases.
Milestones of the Department
Creation of a separate Tuberculosis clinic 1946.
MD course started in 1951 and Diploma (DTCD) started in 1954. Since 1954, More than 250 MD students and 600 DTCD Students have received teaching and training up to year 2010.
Separate OPD building was inaugurated in 1956.
A pulmonary function laboratory was established in 1965.
Inclusion of a new building of this hospital and the first emergency unit of respiratory diseases in 1968.
The first allergy clinic of Uttar Pradesh was established in 1969.
Bed strength of the hospital was further increased to exciting 140 beds in 1975.
Prof. R.N.Tandon (First Head 1946-60), brought laurels to the department be being the recipient of TAI GOLD Medal in 1981.
A non-tubercular ward was started with the sole aim of research and patients care in the fields of thoracoscopy oncology, COPD, Asthma, Allergic disorders and all other non tubercular chest diseases in 1984.
Department aquired UP’s first fibre optic bronchoscope in 1986.
Prof. M.S.Agnihotri (Head 1992-94) received the prestigious Dr. B.C.Roy National Award in 1988.
Under the recommendation of MCI the departments name was changed to the department of tuberculosis and chest diseases from department of tuberculosis in 1992.
RNTCP Unit was established in the OPD wing of the departments in 1995.
Department has aquired UP’s First Video Bronchoscope and is having State of the Art Video Bronchoscopy Lab Since March 2002.
Department acquired facility for Medical Thorachoscopy in 2007
Department has recently been equipped with facility for Sleep Study in 2009.
Department has recently been equipped with facility for C-ARM in 2010.
