Brief History & Resume of the Department

The Department of Anatomy has a glorious past. It was one of the four blocks which was completed for the King George's Medical University, Lucknow at the time of ceremonial opening of the college building by Sir John Hewett in January 1912. Initially it started with 11 MBBS students and Dr. SS Khan was the first head of the Department (1911-1926).Till date the Department has been guided by 14 heads and each one has contributed a new dimension to the Department. We also have some of the internationally acclaimed anatomist like Dr. A C Das, Dr. DR Singh and Dr. Mahdi Hasan were BC Roy Awardee.

The Department was one of the first in the country to accord an MS degree to post-graduate student in 1940. The Museum is one of the best in South East Asia. The initial lot of specimens, models, charts in the museum were brought from England. This historic museum meticulously and systematically displays number of specimens of embryology, gross anatomy, anthropology, radiology, surface anatomy, osteology, cross sectional anatomy, genetics etc. Complete skeletal system of human beings, foetuses and various animals are of special interest. The architecture of the Department speaks about its rich and ancient lineage but with modern amenities. It has research laboratories like Histology lab, Body preservation lab, Dissection Hall, Cytogenetic & tissue culture lab, Anthropology lab and Cadaveric Skill lab. Dissection hall and Cadaveric Skill laboratory beautifully displays the CT and MRI films.

At present, the Department offers MBBS programand BDS program to 250 and 70 students respectively whereas MD Anatomy seats have been increased to eleven per year. The department caters teaching to other courses like MDS, M.Phil., Paramedical, B.Sc. Nursing and Ph.D.

The Department had a privilege of organizing two National Conferences that is silver jubilee NATCON in 1975 and 63rd NATCON in 2015. Department has also organized UPASICON in 2018. In Covid - 19 pandemic period (2020), the Department successfully conducted a three- webinar series and an “International Virtual Anatomy Conference (IVACON 2021)” was conducted in February 2021. Department has organized 68th NATCON of Anatomical Society of India virtually in January 2022. Renovation of museum and cytogenetics lab has been done recently.

Over these years about 400 research papers have been published. Several distinguished guests from country and abroad have been visiting the Department off and on. Department had a privilege to publish “Journal of Anatomical Sciences” (two issues in a year) for the year 2017-2019 under the editorship of Dr. Navneet Kumar.

The Department has Anatomical society which was established in 1956. The society organizes various activities annually. Presently, the torch of success is being carried under the able guidance and headship of Prof.Punita Manik.

Vision:

The department of anatomy promote use of information technology and advanced software in teaching learning and research and to equip the department with Virtual Dissection table. The department is also involved in international collaboration for learning, teaching and research activities.

Our mission is to build up and upgrade knowledge in the field of anatomical sciences by enriching education and research in Gross, Developmental, Microscopic, Imaging Anatomy and Medical Education

We will strive for excellence in anatomy education by:

Improvement of skills by practice and training on cadavers and manikins.

Developing and using the most effective and modern multi-media teaching techniques available, including web-based instruments.

Acting as a resource for our clinical colleagues.

Contributing to the improvement of medical education by conducting meaningful research in education and assessment.

10. Dr. Jyoti Chopra is a member of core team for establishment of BSL-2 COVID-19 Lab in Medical Colleges of Uttar Pradesh, India.
11. Dr. Jyoti Chopra is coordinator of ICMR-Depot in KGMU, Lucknow.
12. Dr. Archana Rani is Editor in Journal of Human Anatomy; International Journal of Current Research and Review; and International Journal of Innovative Research In Medical Science.
13. Dr. Archana Rani awarded best paper presentation in Gross Anatomy Category in National Anatomy Conference (AVEOCON 2021) in July 2021 conducted by TeerthankerMahaveer Medical College & Research Centre, Moradabad.

22. Dr, RK Diwan was awarded best poster presentation in Gross section in IVACON 2021 organized by the Anatomical Society, KGMU, Lucknow, UP.
23. Dr. A K Pankaj and Dr. R K Verma participated in workshop on “Embalming and Museum techniques on 8-9 July 2022 at JIPMER, Puducherry, India.
24. Dr, R K Verma and Dr. SushmaTomar participated in Hands-on workshop on the “Clinical applications of Cytogenetics and Molecular Cytogenetics held at Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (CDFD) from 22-27 August 2022 at Hyderabad, India.
25. Dr. Jyoti Chopra edited 2nd edition of South Asian Edition of Grant’s Dissector in 2022.
26. Dr. Anita Rani & Dr. Jyoti Chopra published 4th edition of Osteology, Gross and Cross-sectional Anatomy Practical Drawing Manual for 1st year MBBS students of KGMU in 2022.
27. Dr. Anita Rani published PG Log Book for postgraduates of Anatomy in 2022.

Other activities:

1. 3 faculty members are actively contributing in Medical Education department:

• Regularly helping in conduction of “Revised basic course of Medical Education Technology and AETCOM”.
• • “Curriculum Implementation Support Program” for training the Curriculum committee members of all the medical colleges of UP region
• • Nominated as MCI observer from Regional center for Curriculum Implementation Support Program (CISP) Workshop.

2. Body Donation Camps and "YugDadheechiDehDaanAbhiyaan" are organized by “GayatriParivaar” in collaboration with Anatomy Department, KGMU.

3. Till now, total 3114 bodies have been registered and 379 bodies donated.

1. Dr. PunitaManik is the Vice Dean of College of Nursing. She is Nodal officer of Department of Anatomy in the environmental cell of the university.
2. Dr Anita Rani is the committee member of Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) &Integrated teaching. She is Vice Dean of Quality & Planning, Member of Internal Quality Assurance Cell, Department of Medical Education and Institutional Ethical committee.
3. Dr. Jyoti Chopra is the Core faculty member of Medical Education Cell. She is Provost of DK & ChhatraChhatravas. She is committee member of Choice Based Credit System (CBCS), Assistant Dean of Integrated Teaching, Member of Curriculum committee and Institutional Animal Ethical Committee.
4. Dr. Archana Rani is Nodal Officer of Department of Anatomy for KGMU Website. She is member of Non-Medical Board constituted during Covid-19 pandemic. She is Member of Library Advisory Committee, KGMU and Member of Athletic Association, KGMU.
5. Dr. R.K. Diwan is the Academic Counselor of Certificate in Health Care Waste Management, assistant provost New CV hostel and member of central library committee.
