About Department
The Stream of Respiratory Medicine had its genesis way back in 1946 with the idea and conviction
to impart patient care along with teaching and training to students pursuing various courses in the
institution like MBBS,MD,Diploma,Mphil,PhD etc. It is one of the premier and oldest center in the
country which has been working for excellence since its inception for education &
research in this field. The department was established in 1946 under the leadership of
Dr.R.N.Tandon who was the first Head of Department. In itially the department
started as a tuberculosis clinic with "Kasturba TB Hospital" which had a 40 bedded hospital
attached to it. The MD degree course in tuberculosis was started in 1951 and subsequently diploma
in tuberculosis & chest diseases was started in 1954. A separate OPD wing was added to
the Kasturba TB Hospital in 1956 which was inaugurated by the Minister of Health Late Sri CB Gupta.
The department has come a long way since its commencement, upgraded leaps & bounds in all aspects
, has changed gears, and is rapidly expanding its arms in each & every dimension related to
the field of Pulmonary Medicine along with critical care too and is presently contributing its services
as a 140 bedded hospital catering various needs of respiratory diseases patients.
The department is presently headed by Prof Surya Kant who took the charge of Head of
Department on 5th Aug 2011, he has carried on the glorious legacy since then and the department
has been sailing through smoothly under his able leadership with a prestigious mark on various
national and international forums.
As of now the Department is fully equipped having facilities like a dedicated Nodal TB Centre to cater
sensitive as well as Resistant TB patients, A state of the art Interventional Pulmonology Suite with latest
equipment to deal with all kind of patients requiring intervention for diverse diagnostic& therapeutic purposes,
A devoted functioning Allergy Clinic for diagnosing various allergic ailments like ABPA, food allergy
environmental allergens, drugs etc, the department has a well-resourced and advanced Pulmonary
Function Test laboratory with provision of Plethysmography as well as Impulse Oscillometry,
The department is also having the luxury of having latest Polysomnography (Sleep Lab)
device for Type I sleep study. Needless to say but of course deserves a mention that it is a
renowned center for the management of chronic respiratory diseases like Tuberculosis, COPD,
Asthma, ILD, Lung Cancer and Other Allied Chest Diseases. Recently, the department has
further taken a leap and has started offering Services to the critically ill patients in the form of ICU which
has the premium quality ventilators, monitors etc. The departmental faculty, residents and other
staff members have been on their toes continuously working for betterment and promises better
advancements and developments in the years to come.
The department has diligent strategies with a vision and conviction to excel in the field in all aspects
excellent including medical education, unparalleled medical ethics, Ground-breaking research and
exceptional patient care.

Milestones of the Department
Â
Creation of a separate Tuberculosis clinic in1946 under the leadership of Dr. R.N. Tandon.
MD course started in 1951 and Diploma (DTCD) started in 1954. Since 1954, More than 300 MD students and 600 DTCD Students have received teaching and training up to year 2020.*
Separate OPD building was inaugurated in 1956.
A pulmonary function laboratory was established in 1965.
Inclusion of a new building of this hospital and the first emergency unit of respiratory diseases in 1968.
The first allergy clinic of Uttar Pradesh was established in 1969.
Bed strength of the hospital was further increased to exciting 140 beds in 1975.
R. N. Tandon (First Head 1946-60), brought laurels to the department be being the recipient of TAI GOLD Medal in 1981.
A non-tubercular ward was started with the sole aim of research and patients care in the
Fields of thoracoscopy oncology, COPD, Asthma, Allergic disorders and all other non tubercular chest diseases in 1984.
Department acquired UP’s first fibre optic bronchoscope in 1986.
M S. Agnihotri (Head 1992-94) received the prestigious Dr.B.C.Roy National Award In 1988.
Under the recommendation of MCI the departments name was changed to the department of tuberculosis and chest diseases from department of tuberculosis in 1992.
RNTCP Unit was established in the OPD wing of the departments in 1995.
Department has acquired UP’s First Video Bronchoscope and is having State of the
Art Video Bronchoscopy Lab Since March 2002.
Department acquired facility for Medical Thoracoscopy in 2007
Department has recently been equipped with facility for Sleep Study in 2009.
Department has recently been equipped with facility for C-ARM in 2010.

1st Respiratory ICU was started in trauma centre building in 2015, which is shifted to Shatabdi phase 2 building in second floor. Now a second new 6+2 bedded ICU started in the department itself which is inaugurated by honourable vice chancellor Lt. Gen. (Dr.) Bipin Puri Sir in 2021.
