Neurosurgery in KGMU started as a Unit in the Department of General Surgery in the year 1961 with Dr P N Tandon at the helm as Professor (1961-1965). In subsequent years Dr VS Dave (1967-1989), Dr GB Newton (1965-1993), Dr DK Chhabra (1974-86) and Dr VP Singh (1990-1993) joined as faculty and nurtured this specialty.

This Neurosurgery Unit was upgraded to a full-fledged separate Department in the year 1994 with untiring effort of Dr Mazhar Husain (1986-2008) as Head of Department. The Single Faculty Department was strengthened by joining of Dr Ravi Dev (1998-2009), Dr BK Ojha (2003), Dr Anil Chandra (2003), Dr Sunil Kumar Singh (2009-2019), Dr ChhitijSrivastava(2010)and further consolidated by appointment of Dr Somil Jaiswal (2015), Dr Manish Jaiswal(2015),Dr Ankur Bajaj (2016) and Dr AwdheshYadav (2016). Presently department is under headship of Dr BK Ojha and comprises of seven Faculty members.

The M.Ch Neurosurgery program started in the department in the year 1971 with intake of 2 M.Ch seats per year,which subsequently increased to 3 per year in 1996 and 4 seats per year in 2011. Currently Department is mandated by MCI for training of 8 MCh students per year. Till date, 99 students have completed M.Ch Neurosurgery training from this department and serving the society. Post Doctoral Fellowships in Endoscopic Neurosurgery has started in the department from 2019.

The department currently functions in a new multistorey building of Shatabdi Hospital Phase - 2 on 5thfloor. The office complex and the general wards (42 beds) and private wards (7 rooms, 14 beds) are on same floor The 4 state of the art operation theaters are on 1stfloor in the adjoining Shatabdi phase 1 building. The department has a 35 seatcapacity Auditorium with Audio Visual Facility, Departmental Library, Neurophysiotherapy Unit and a staff strength of approximately 150 to run the department. The department has a strong presence in the New Emergency Complex and Trauma Center of the University with dedicated Neuro-trauma Ward (52 beds), Operation Theater (2) and Neuro ICU (4 beds). Department has been among the pioneers of development of Neuroendoscopic Surgery in India. Apart from all kinds of Neuroendoscopic surgery (ETV, Endoscopic Pituitary Surgery, Endoscopic Lumbar Disc Surgery), Neuronavigation assisted Cranial and Spinal Surgery, ICP Monitoring, Minimally Invasive Cranial and Spinal Neurosurgery, Intraoperative Neurophysiological Monitoring, Brain Tumor Surgery, Spinal Tumor Surgery, Brain and Spinal Trauma Management, Surgery of CV Junction Anomalies, Transsphenoidal Surgery, Neuro Vascular Surgery, Micro Neurosurgery, Pediatric Neurosurgery (Meningocele, Encephalocele, Hydrocephalus etc.) and Spinal Instrumentation are routinely performed. We are actively involved in management of craniofacial defects with Department of Plastic Surgery, KGMU,Lucknow.

Department has been actively involved in conducting Oration, Conferences and CME's. National Conference of Neurosurgeons namely KGNEUROCON-2014, NSSICON-2018 and KGNEUROCON-2019have been successfully organized by the department. Annual Dave-Newton Oration is being organized to commemorate the founders of Neurosurgery at KGMU.

Apart from patient care services and education; we have regularly organized Awareness campaigns namely World Head Injury Awareness Day and World Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Week with active participation of hundreds of school children.
