The field of paediatric orthopaedics has seen a major breakthrough and is evolving rapidly. However still in our country there exists a huge gap between the requirement and availability of qualified, experienced and dedicated paediatric orthopaedic surgeons. In order to bridge this gap KGMU became a pioneer institute to create a separate and exclusive super specialty department of Paediatric Orthopaedics, dedicated to care of musculoskeletal (bone, joint, back, or muscle) problems in children upto 18years of age.
The department was formally inaugurated on 9th August 2016, by the then Hon'ble Vice Chancellor Prof Ravi Kant with Prof. Ajay Singh as it's head.

The Mission of the department is to:
Attain National and International Reputation in Pediatric Orthopaedics in the areas of Patient Care, Education, and Musculoskeletal Research.
With 20 exclusive beds in IPD and 12 bed in trauma centre for children suffering from various musculoskeletal problems, presently, the department has 4 faculty members as follows:

All the faculty members are involved in research, training and teaching activities.
The department has three full time senior residents in team. The department is also offering a 12 months post doctoral fellowship course in Paediatric Orthopaedics, with an annual intake of 2 students. In order to standardize,the curriculum of the fellowship program is designed in such a way to make it structured and outcome based. Apart from fellowships, the department also enrolls PhD candidates annually. The departmental library has all the textbooks pertinent to Pediatric Orthopaedics and computer facilities with internet connection access to well reputed journals.
Out-patient services are provided by competent doctors on every Monday/ Wednesday and Saturday between 9am to 1pm at room-425, New Opd Block, KGMU. Surgical/operative services are provided twice every week in well-equipped modular operation theatres.
The department provides state of the art facilities and treatment of all children with congenital, traumatic and genetic disorders like Cerebral palsy, Clubfoot, DDH, Limb deformities Limb Length inequalities, Perthes disease, rickets metabolic bone disorders, Scoliosis, Paediatric fractures, sports injuries and scoliosis etc.
The Department also offers comprehensive clubfoot treatment, in collaboration with CURE CLUBFOOT FOUNDATION. It is one of largest clubfoot clinic in India, which provides clubfoot treatment with free braces/shoes and regular follow-up programme.
It is also working towards starting pediatric orthopedics sub specialty clinics in the fields of pediatric oncology, pediatric spine, CTEV, congenital deformities and Cerebral Palsy. The work of creating DDH, CTEV and tumor Registry is already underway. We are also working on having MoU with institutes of national and international repute, to broaden the horizon of exposure for our students and faculty members.
