About Department
The Department of Surgical Gastroenterology has been a dynamic department of King George's Medical University since its inception in January 2006. It has made rapid progress within a few years and now offers all varieties of gastrointestinal surgeries in the area of gastroesophageal, hepatopancreaticobiliary, coloproctology and minimally invasive surgery.
The department, headed by Prof. Abhijit Chandra, provides multidisciplinary management of all gastrointestinal related problems. This is a major referral centre not only for the state of Uttar Pradesh but also for patients from neighbouring states like Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Nepal.
The surgical gastroenterology operation theatre complex is equipped with the latest and best of the class equipment. Both diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures (upper and lower gastrointestinal) as well as ERCP are performed daily. It has the proud privilege of being a centre which imparts training in public sector in the field of endoscopy and advanced laparoscopy.
The Department of Surgical Gastroenterology is also actively engaged in both clinical and basic research. Antropylorus transposition for severe fecal incontinence, genetics and molecular biology involving gallbladder malignancy and activation and differentiation of omentum are major research areas. PhD candidates are enrolled annually and are actively involved in research works of the department. The department also has a curriculum for training of nutritionists and dieticians and has many research projects with grants from ICMR and also from public private collaboration.
The department runs MCh course in Surgical Gastroenterology which is one of the few places in India to offer this super specialty training. It also offers post MS (General Surgery) senior residency with three(03 seats/year) seats on an annual basis. The experienced and well trained faculty is actively involved in MBBS, MS (General Surgery) teaching and training.

Prof. Abhijit Chandra is the Head of the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, KGMU.

As a faculty, he is an examiner for Surgical Gastroenterology and General Surgery, and an invited speaker at various scientific forums. He is currently involved in several clinical trials and is chief guide for research of Ph.D. students.
He has been involved in the department since its inception in 2006 and has keen interest in coloproctology, hepato-pancreato-biliary surgery, cancer biology, surgical immune response and multi organ failure. His research and surgical techniques in total anorectal reconstruction has been well acknowledged at various international surgical forums.

Dr. Gupta is trained in all major gastrointestinal procedures. He has specific interest in hepato-pancreato-biliary oncology, critical care and liver transplantation. He regularly performs major surgeries including liver resections and vascular reconstruction in patients with cancer of the liver, gall bladder and bile ducts. Dr. Gupta is providing Gastrointestinal surgery and cadaveric organ retrieval and transplant services at King George Medical University, which has already benefitted many liver and kidney failure patients, in the state of Uttar Pradesh and beyond.
