In the King George's Medical College, Lucknow the Department of Periodontics was founded in 1980 along with the creation of the Faculty of Dental Sciences. The post graduate course in periodontics was started in 1965 under Prof. T.N. Chawla. Currently there are 04 M.D.S. seats per year in the department. Thus total 12 M.D.S. students are always present in the department for a 03 years M.D.S. Course.
We are also offering 02 years Diploma Course for Dental Hygienist, which was started in 1967. After passing out, these Dental Hygienist are usually absorbed in various government and private institutions/hospitals to promote dental health in the community.
After formation of Dental Faculty Prof. T.N. Chawla became Dean on 15th January 1980. Prof. K.K. Kapoor took over as Head of the Department of Periodontics on 15th January 1980 and remained till his retirement on 6th April 1994. Thereafter Prof. K.K. Mehrotra became Head of the Department of Periodontics on 6th April 1994 and continued till 28th February 2001. Prof. Jaya Dixit took over the charge as Head of the Department on 1st March 2001 and remained till 23rd December 2015. Prof. M.A. Khan became Head of the Department on 24th December 2015 and continued upto 30th June 2016. Prof. Nand Lal took over the charge as Head of the Department of Periodontology on 1st July 2016 and still continuing.
The department has been involved in various research activities funded by Department of Scienceand Technology (D.S.T.) New Delhi, C.S.T. U.P., D.B.T. and I.C.M.R. New Delhi.
The department is furnished with modern equipments like Laser, Implant Kits, Ultrasonic devices, Florida Probe, Piezo-Ultrasonic Bone Surgery Unit, Surgical Microscope, Periotron, Tissue Contouring System and Intra Oral Camera.
The department is doing all kinds of periodontal treatment like Scaling and Root-Planing, Perio Plastic Surgical Procedures, Periodontal Flap Surgeries, Endo-Perio treatment and Implantsand Dental Implant Surgery. Free Scaling and Root-Planing are being done for a large number of oral cancer patients, BPL Card Holders patients and destitute patients along with oral hygiene instructions. Annual OPD attendance of patients is more than 20,000. Various free Dental Check-up Camps are frequently organised in different schools and in institutions for mentally retarded children by our faculty.
Currently PhD Course is also running in the department under the guidance of faculties of the department.
