Annual achievements of the University King George‟s Medical University stands out striving to fight the COVID-19 pandemic in the year 2020 and also maintaining its excellence in field of patient care, research and education. In lieu of the spread of COVID-19 pandemic, Corona Task Force was established in King George‟s Medical University to supervise, co-ordinate and manage treatment of COVID 19 patients and also for necessary actions related to spread of infection. The task force was formed under the chairmanship of Honourable Vice Chancellor of King George‟s Medical University, UP, Lucknow. Several committees were formed for a smooth execution of COVID-19 management strategies - OPD management committee, Isolation Corona Care Committee, ICU & Ventilator Committee, Quarantine Committee, Triage Management Committee, Logistics Management Committee, Data and Media Committee, Hospital (HR) management committee, Training committee, Control Room committee, Sanitization Committee, Surgical Team/OT committee, COVID-19 Depot Committee. Regular meetings were held for actions plans and developing Standard Operating Protocols. All management strategies and SOPs were formulated according to the instructions of Government of India and Government of Uttar Pradesh. „Corona Fever Clinic‟ was established for 24 hour services for the patients for effective screening for COVID-19 suspected patients. During period of lockdown, King George‟s Medical University started „Digital OPD Services‟ for the benefit of the patients. Each department was allocated a unique telephone number for this purpose. „Corona Control Room‟ was established to provide 24 hour advise to the general public regarding COVID-19 related information and activities in the University. Corona Control Room, KGMU, keeps track of bed availability, admitted and discharged patient data every 24 hours, death record and call detail record. Roughly 30 bed referrals per day are done by control room. It is continuously solving and resolving problems and queries of public/patients- approximately 5000+ calls till date have been attended to. Control room reports to district administration, nodal officers for COVID, DGME, CMO and Integrated Command centre for all type of data and records. King George‟s Medical University was designated for testing of COVID-19 with two more healthcare institutes in Uttar Pradesh. The objective was management of corona testing facilities with excellence. It was the only COVID testing facility authorized for providing confirm diagnosis of COVID-19 in whole of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. 5 real times PCR, and 2 TruNet testing machines are currently being used 24 x 7, wherein 6000 tests are performed daily. Financial approval of Rs. 10,86,29,173.00 was given by Government of Uttar Pradesh to set up Roche Cobas 6800 fully integrated and completely automated entirely transformational system for nucleic acid amplification testing in the department of Microbiology to strengthen the COVID-19 testing facilities. King George‟s Medical University was nominated as „Mentor Institute‟ by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) to guide 44 (14 government and 30 private) healthcare facilities in increasing COVID- 19 testing capacity. ICMR also approved King George‟s Medical University for conducting External quality assurance in other COVID-19 labs of Uttar Pradesh. We were the first to start sample pooling for COVID-19 testing in the State. ICMR has also nominated King George‟s Medical University as „Centre for excellence‟ for RTPCR kits, VTM, and Extraction kits. „eCCS‟ (Electronic COVID Care Support) with support from State Government of Uttar Pradesh was established with King George‟s Medical University as „Advanced hub‟ and linked „Primary Hub‟ as GSVM Medical college, Kanpur. Primary hubs were instructed to receive guidance from advanced hubs related to COVID-19 care of patients. King George‟s Medical University was declared as regional „depo‟ for smooth supply of COVID-19 testing kits to 15 healthcare institutes in Uttar Pradesh. King George‟s Medical University started with a 24 bed capacity Isolation ward for COVID patients to now a dedicated COVID hospital in RALC building of 500 bed capacity overall, with 250 beds reserved for critical/intensive care. A 20,000 litres capacity of oxygen tank was started in dedicated COVID-19 hospital in RALC campus for a continuous uninterrupted supply of oxygen to sick patients. University also geared up in creating and maintaining quarantine facilities for faculty, students, and employees in wake of spread of the disease. Trauma and emergency services continued throughout the pandemic period for the benefit of the masses. King George‟s Medical University in collaboration with Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University, Lucknow presented to the State Government an Artificial Intelligence based model from X ray images of COVID-19 patients for early and accurate screening of the disease. There are approximately 74 research activities related to COVID-19 currently under execution in King George‟s Medical University by various faculty members that have been approved by the Institutional Ethics Committee. A mobile/web based application ‘Chikitsa Setu’ was developed by King George‟s Medical University in collaboration with National Institute of Smart Governance, which was inaugurated by Honourable Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Shri Adityanath Yogi ji on 19th May 2020. The application provides educational information on COVID-19 transmission prevention for healthcare workers in the form of 29 video presentations. These videos are also available on University website. A talk on COVID-19 was also delivered to corona warriors of Bhartiya Shikshan Mandal by Honourable Vice Chancellor, King George‟s Medical University. Continuing with preparation of educational resources, King George‟s Medical University also released a book titled “COVID-19: Ek Jaankaari” for awareness of general public. This book was given to all patients and also general public free of cost. Another book released was titled: “Coronavirus disease 2019). Information related to COVID-19 was also disseminated through social media platforms and various online platforms like zoom, youtu.be, facebook etc. King George‟s Medical University was the first in the State of Uttar Pradesh to start „Plasma therapy‟ for COVID 19 patients. First plasma bank of the State was inaugurated by honourable Governor of Uttar Pradesh, Smt. Anandiben Patel at King George‟s Medical University on 15th August 2020. KGMU through Department of Transfusion medicine took the lead and established plasma therapy all over the state in Prayagraj, Gorakhpur, Agra, Firozabad, Kanpur and is still in the process of establishing and coordinating more plasma banks both in government and private as the Nodal centre. These centres were inaugurated by Honourable Chief minister in November 2020. A special film on plasma donation awareness was also released by Honourable Chief minister, made by King George‟s Medical University, Department of Transfusion Medicine. Working guidelines for convalescent plasma therapy have also been prepared to help in the functioning of plasma banks all over the state. A total of 400 patients have donated plasma and 520 COVID patients have so far been benefitted from plasma therapy. Online classes for all medical, dental, nursing and paramedical students were regularly organised even under the unusual circumstances of COVID-19 pandemic as per instructions from Honourable Governor of Uttar Pradesh and Government of Uttar Pradesh. A number of significant projects were inaugurated in King George‟s Medical University on 23rd October 2020 with support of Government of Uttar Pradesh by Honourable Minister of Medical Education, Uttar Pradesh, Shri Suresh Khanna ji. Under the scheme of National Health Mission, a 100 bedded, block „A‟ in MCH wing was inaugurated in Queen Mary Hospital; Medical gas plants and pipeline in 13 clinical departments of King George‟s Medical University; Construction work for Faculty/Employee residence in Amrapali Yojna, Hardoi road; Construction of „Foot overbridge‟ to Queen Mary Hospital; Establishment of Fire alarms and Hydrants. King George‟s Medical University was awarded the first prize by State Innovations Family Planning Service Project Agency for „No scalpel Vasectomy‟ in Uttar Pradesh. King George‟s Medical University organised training of lactating mothers on occasion of completing one year of establishment of its „Milk Bank‟ under Department of Pediatrics and collaboration of „Path Foundation‟. With the inauguration of premises allocated for operations of newly developed Community Radio Station 89.6 in Shatabdi Hospital phase-2, it is for the first time that such an initiative has been taken by any healthcare university. This radio station is proposed to spread awareness amongst the general public regarding overall health and its maintenance. King George‟s Medical University has adopted 10 villages of Lucknow district through its „Social Outreach Cell‟- Maati, Banthra, Gauri, Natkur, Amausi, Daroga Kheda, Ambarpur, Pahadpur, Bani, Mulayikheda. Regular healthcare services are being delivered to these adopted villages. King George‟s Medical University has also motivated its affiliated colleges for the same and four villages have been adopted under this initiative. King George‟s Medical University has adopted its tuberculosis patients of age group 18-31 years, under directions of Honourable Governor of Uttar Pradesh and in collaboration with UP Task force, RNTCP for complete treatment and nurturing of these patients. Extending the services to general masses, King George‟s Medical University has also been involved in testing students for anaemia in several educational institutes- Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University, Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti Language University, Dr. Shakuntala Misra National Rehabilitation University, Lucknow. „Dant Aushadhi Vaatika‟ was established by Faculty of Dental sciences, King George‟s Medical University. This herbal garden was established with several plants with medicinal value for oral health. Memorandum of Understanding were extended with some National organizations like- Council of Scientific and Industrial Research – National Botanical research Institute; Central Drug Research Institute, Lucknow; Central Council for research Ayurvedic Sciences, New Delhi; Heartfulness Institute, Ranga Reddy (Telangana); Lords Education and Health Society, New Delhi; Indian Army Represented by HQ Central Command and also with some State organizations like: Veer Bahadur Singh Purvanchal University, Jaunpur; Bhaorao Deoras Seva Nyas, Lucknow; FLO Lucknow Chapter; Integral University, Lucknow; and University of Lucknow. Student Exchange programs this year included visit of 14 medical undergraduate students from Texas technical University, Texas USA for 11 days at King George‟s Medical University and 2 medical interns from our University visited Texas technical University, Texas USA. 09 International guest faculty and 13 national faculty visited King George‟s Medical University before COVID period. Since then several international and national lectures have been organised online only as webinars. A total of 7898 publications (as listed in Scopus) and 13643 (as listed in Pubmed) have been published by King George‟s Medical University so far, of which 672 (as in scopus), 828 (as in pubmed ) were published in the year 2020.
