In the early years of the existence of the college, there was no separate department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and only 12 beds under the charge of a part time professor and a resident obstetric surgeon were assigned to this specialty. The students received the major part of their hospital training in Madras.
This arrangement continued for more than a decade, but as great need for a self contained department was felt, the present Queen Mary's Hospital was built and inaugurated in 1932 by Sir Malcom Halley, then Governor of the United Province of Oudh. Initially the hospital had 56 beds including 6 cots for the newborn babies.
The number of bed was increased to 120 in 1950. Since 1954, the hospital has been completely self-sufficient in the training of undergraduate students. In 1959 an extension for the Outpatients' Department was built.
Further expansions took place in the 1960s and 1970s. Many more units were opened e.g. the Post Partum Unit, Minor Operation Theatre, Antenatal Care Unit, Postnatal Care Unit, Neonatology Unit and Emergency Operation Theatre. During the last 10 years the QMH building has been renovated. The operation theatre complexes and labor room have also been renovated and equipped with sophisticated instruments and fetal monitoring equipment.
Further in the year 2019-2020, expansion took place in form of addition of 100 bedded MCH wing. The bed strength of Queen Mary’s Hospital as of 2022 is 342 beds. The department now has fully operational obstetric ICU and HDU Beds. The department has new state of the art Labor Room Complex and expanded emergency Operation theatre. The department has fully functional 100 bedded MCH wing. On 31st July 2021, the department also got its own Blood storage center, with the help of Department of Transfusion medicine, KGMU. The facility was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor. The renovated neonatal unit is located on the second floor of MCH wing. The LMU unit caters to all lactating mothers admitted in QMH and in OPD, provides counseling for milk donation . the department has new departmental library and committee room.
