The independent Department of Operative Dentistry came into existence in 1980, with the establishment of the Faculty of Dental Sciences, under the headship of Prof CP Govila. However, the postgraduate course in this subject was started way back in 1977. The department presently takes 4 postgraduates every year in a 3 year course through NEETPG. The department imparts preclinical and clinical training at the post graduate and undergraduate level in Restorative Dentistry and Endodontics.
Prof A.P. Tikku head of the department and former dean of dental faculty is one of the senior most post graduate teacher in the country and is a known figure in dentistry in the country.
This is the only department in the whole country performing direct filling pure gold (24 karat) Restoration. Department is equipped with three operating microscope, laser (hard & soft tissue), Endodontic Enhance System, Digora, intraoral camera, IOPA X-ray all porcelain furnace RVG and 18 state of the art Kavo chair units have been acquired for the postgraduate program.
About 40,000 patient are treated every year in this departmentwhich includes4400root canal treatment, 80endodontic surgery, 11000 restoration, 11000 IOPA X-ray, 350crowns, inlays and onlays and various other procedure annually. The departments holds 2-3 skill enhancement programme every year. The departments has the credit of doing record 167 single sitting root canal treatment in a day in March 2018 and a record 793 restorations in a single day in March 2019 The faculty regularly attends national and international conferences every year and conducts courses and delivers lectures at national levels.
